SHUNKIN, 2001 Adapted from the novel by Tanizaki
A witty theatrical work based on a story by the great modern Japanese writer, Junichiro Tanizaki, Big Dance Theater's SHUNKIN follows the secret love affair of a beautiful, blind musician with the man who is both her her servant and disciple. Combining Tanizaki's exquisite prose with interviews from contemporary rock stars, Shunkin features songs sung live by Cynthia Hopkins, an original score by Glenn Branca, and visual design by Michael Counts.
"Shunkin achieves moments of delicate beauty, dramatic irony, probing storytelling and heady musical synchronicity. The dance-theater work is a richly enigmatic portrait that reveals as much about contemporary stardom as traditional."
